(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 22 - Justice Minister Carlo Nordio said
Wednesday Italy could build new prisons to ease chronic
overcrowding with rental proceeds from historic ones which are
no longer used.
After discussing the issue with Premier Giorgia Meloni, Nordio
said: "I particularly thank our Prime Minister because we had a
very fruitful exchange of ideas on the possibility of converting
prison facilities of a certain rental value into monetary values
that can be used for the construction and renovation of other
places of detention.
He added: "There is also the possibility of renovating many
buildings, starting with disused barracks, for inmates who have
committed less serious crimes." (ANSA).
